Hand Hooked Area RugsAlso known as Needlepoint area rugs, Micro Hooked area rugs and Tapestry area rugs. Hand hooked rugs are the best example of rugs as decorative enhancements to a room’s décor. These wool area rugs are hand tufted in India and China, mainly, and feature exquisite detail in their pattern presentation. The hand tufting allows an exactness of detail and color placement unmatched in the piled rug industry except by very finest (read a lot of knots) hand knotted rugs for much much less. Hand hooked rugs are dramatically affected in their finished looks depending on the “denier” of the yarn (thickness) used. The thinner the yarn bundle used the greater the density of the rug resulting in finer detail. These rugs are referred to as Micro-Hooks or Tapestry qualities. These types lend themselves to a more formal setting. “Hand-Hooked” rugs use a more generous yarn bundle and so project a more casual or countrified air. Patterns offered in this construction tend toward botanical, whimsical and renaissance geometric as opposed to the more formal patterns offered in micro hooks. These rugs are very popular for foyers, sunrooms and summer homes. Nourison’s Country Heritage collection is considered a classic example of the casual hooked rugs. |
