The cable look exploded onto the flooring scene out of California in the eighties and has now become a viable stable niche in both the carpet and rug industry. These rugs offer the ultimate in apparent luxury due to their thick tall strands of yarn that make up the piled surface; a man made version of a bear rug, per se. Unlike real animal skins cable area rugs are customizable to any shape, pattern, inset or insert with a wide array of color ways ranging from primary to heathered and Berber.

Cables constructions come in a wide variety. Some of the permutations are thickness of yarn strands, levels of twist and varying yarn bundle heights all of which dramatically affect the surface texture. In some cables two different yarn types are bundled the result being during the dying process a barber pole effect is created. It is also not unusual to have two different bundles of different thick nesses woven in the same fabric in order to emulate the randomness of fur.
