Braided Area RugsOlson defines these reversible rugs (also known as rag rugs) as a truly American original. These handcrafted rugs are a reflection of earlier times when simpler colors, schemes and constructions dominated in the American home. Their utilitarian reversible usage and a wide variety of shapes also contributed to their appeal. Braided rugs are made from long strips of cloth or yarn that are created through a woven or plaiting system. These long strips are then sewn into a wide variety of shapes. Oval rugs have been the standard shape since time immemorial; however in more recent times (the last ten years) manufacturers have branched out with a new array of shapes in order to broaden this categories appeal. Square rugs, rectangular rugs and even round rugs are now standard in this genre. These rugs are also commonly referred to as throw rugs, bath rugs, rag rugs, etc. because of the myriad applications for which they are used. Colorations are another area wherein this category has dramatically changed in the last decade. Primaries, Cabana striping, bolder jewel tones, monochromatic as well as the classic heathering have all contributed to braids explosion of new styling. These new color ways are being boldly and even playfully integrated with the new wide variety of shapes and are creating some of the freshest new looks available in the market today. These new “home rugs” are made from a wide variety of fibers including wool, wool /nylon blends, cotton, and of course polypropylene. Each fiber has its benefits depending on the users needs. Wool rugs are more durable but more susceptible to staining while synthetic rugs are hydrophobic, making them more stain resistant but less durable. One of the most underrated features of braided rugs is their reversibility, giving them twice the floor life versus a piled rug. Braided rugs are commonly used in the following areas; kitchens, sun rooms, recreation rooms, and of course summer homes. Their “napless” pile makes them easy to keep clean. |
