Area Rug OverviewOlsonRugShop defines contemporary rugs as any rug featuring an ultra modern design in the latest and hottest colors. From bold primaries to soft neutrals these rugs use bold designs mated with inspirational placement of colors to create the ultimate floor art. Contemporary rugs are particularly effective when used in shapes such as round rugs, square rugs and octagonal rugs. A newer trend in contemporary rugs is the usage of a wider array of materials and blending of different twist levels of the yarns to create dramatically different looks. Rugs are now being made using such materials as natural fibers, furniture fabrics, bamboo and silk. In order to create a three-dimensional look to the rugs different levels of twisted yarn are being used in a single rug giving the rug heightened levels of textural finish. Loops with cut piles, patterns exceeding their borders (see Nourison’s Serenata for a particularly good example) and silk highlights are all adding to the categories eclectic boldness. OlsonRugShop defines contemporary rugs in three subcategories: Geometric, Abstract, and Organic. Geometric rugs are symmetrical patterns utilizing straight lines to create “architecturally” pleasing patterns to the eye. These patterns emulate a wide range of influences from 17 th century Italian marbles; Arabic influenced Granadan mosaics to more basic tribal motifs. Wool rugs, synthetic rugs, cotton rugs, and even acrylic rugs are used to enhance the look and feel of this category. These patterns are particularly effective when shown in octagonal rugs, square rugs and rectangular rugs. See Oriental Weavers Ariana and Nourison’s Versailles Palace for examples. Abstract rugs are defined as a rug whose pattern is asymmetrical. These are the most evocative rugs made and a reflection of the best that modern art has produced in the last century. Influenced by tribal rug patterns, botanical fabrics, hooked rug construction, animal skins throw rugs, and natural materials such as sisal and sea grass, all come into play in these the most eclectic of rug designs. Particularly effective in round rugs, runners or smaller rectangles (as accent rugs). See Momeni’s New Wave as prime example. Organic is best thought of as the flip version of geometric in that the pattern is also symmetrical however the execution of the design is with curvilinear lines. Most of these patterns derive their source from the classic period of tapestries so popular in Europe, until recently, over the last thousand years. These rugs induce a sense of tranquility and ease while easily tying together a wide band of contemporary furnishings. These patterns are particularly appealing in round rugs, runners, and oval rugs. See Dalyn’s Palace collection. |
